Senior Underwriter, Enterprise Benefits Solutions (Toronto, Ontario)

Our team is growing and we are looking for a Senior Underwriter, Enterprise Benefits Solutions to join our Toronto, Ontario team.

We are looking for a dynamic individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced and growing company.   In this role, you will manage a variety of tasks related to group insurance including analyzing plan sponsor data to make recommendations relative to the performance of clients’ employee benefits programs and measuring actual results against industry standards and plan sponsor goals.   You are passionate about group benefits and are committed to providing high quality service to a block of clients with various funding arrangements.  In addition, you are a subject matter expert with a solid understanding of group insurance underwriting complimented by actuarial and financial projection skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Working closely with the consultant and account management team to develop and deliver on pre and post renewal strategies, supporting the financial requirement of the clients’ annual account management plan
  • Conduct analysis of client data in association with; financial reports, monthly and quarterly utilization, annual renewal reports and ad-hoc requests
  • Responsible for monitoring and reporting on clients’ cost/utilization patterns, identifying cost drivers, trends, areas of risk and other discrepancies
  • Review renewal rating based on formulas, knowledge of carrier, current trends, reserves and other related factors, discussing and negotiating with carriers, and completing the renewal cycle with reporting and commentary
  • Calculate and support on amendment pricing, union negotiations and annual budgets/renewal projections
  • Assist with the preparation of marketing specifications, review and prepare cost comparisons of carrier proposals and participate in new plan implementations
  • Support in the on-boarding of new clients by working collaboratively with the consultant and account management team to deliver on the implementation plan and timeline
  • Maintains accountability for client database and revenue tracking of client accounts and projects, providing necessary reporting to consultant and internal teams
  • Establish positive carrier/vendor relationships for the benefit of both clients and People Corporation
  • Maintain a full understanding of the insurance markets, funding alternatives, networks and benefit plan options

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in Actuarial Sciences (i.e. Mathematics, Statistics), Finance, Economics, Business Administration or related field
  • GBA or CEBS designation an asset
  • 5+ years previous experience as an analyst/underwriting in the group insurance industry
  • Solid understanding of various underwriting and funding methodologies
  • Strong working knowledge of flex plan pricing and association plan underwriting
  • Strong analytical, mathematical and problem solving skills
  • Proficient in Excel and PowerPoint, as well as a solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to develop and leverage relationships, both internally and externally
  • Self-motivated, highly driven, team player, with the ability to work independently
  • Ability to prioritize time sensitive deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
