Director of Underwriting (Ontario)

Gallivan Student Health and Wellness is a leading National consultant for over 38 post-secondary student organizations in Canada. We offer a range services including domestic group benefit plans, coverage for International student groups, mental health and wellness as well as legal plans. We are looking for a dynamic individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment to join our team in Waterloo, Ontario as Director of Underwriting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop sophisticated benefit plan designs for domestic and international plans.
  • Drive renewal strategies and develop solutions to address complex financial positions of clients
  • Works closely with business development, client relations and operations teams on pre-renewal strategy, RFPs, funding model options and post renewal analysis
  • Analyze cost drivers by reviewing clients’ cost/utilization data and looking for year- over –year trend study or comparisons to external benchmarks
  • Strong Underwriting/actuarial and financial projection skills
  • Conducts reserve evaluation to help renewal negotiation
  • Conduct Flexible benefit plan program design and re-design and implementation projects
  • Clearly establishes and communicates timelines with the client relation team and keeps them apprised of changes and renewal updates
  • Key contributor in the on-boarding of new clients by working collaboratively with client relations and operations team
  • Establishes effective carrier/vendor relationships to serve clients in benefits procurement and administration
  • Maintains a full understanding of the insurance markets, funding alternatives, networks, and benefit plan options
  • Ensures accuracy of client data in database
  • Participate in renewal meetings and RFP presentations as required
  • Help on Underwriting projects as assigned specifically on RFPs and RFIs
  • Contribute to the development of new Underwriting tools and approaches
  • Coach client relation team on the fundamentals of Underwriting
  • Build relationships internally and collaborate effectively on cross-functional teams

Core Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years previous experience in a group insurance environment
  • Post-secondary education in Actuarial Science (i.e. Mathematics, Statistics) or Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or related field
  • CEBS designation an asset
  • Solid understanding of group insurance Underwriting is critical, as is the desire to serve as a subject matter expert
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and organizational abilities
  • Comfortable communicating with insurance carriers and Account Managers
  • Proven understanding of underwriting and actuarial methodologies for rating group insurance products
  • Understanding of various funding arrangements including ASO and Retention
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to prioritize a high volume of work with competing deadlines, organize multiple tasks
  • Strong desire to take ownership and see tasks through to completion
  • Ability to leverage relationships with the team to aid in problem solving
  • Ability to travel on occasion (post COVID) and sometimes on short notice
  • Strong computer skills i.e. proficient or expert in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
